Company Profile: Alstom Rolling Stock USA, an ISO 9001:2000 registered company, acquired the facilities of Morrison Knudsen in 1995 in Hornell, NY, and has grown the facility and workforce, once at 50 employees, to 850. Alstom manufactures and refurbishes passenger rail cars, propulsion equipment and apparatus.

Situation: Alstom became ISO certified in 1999. In order to continually maintain their quality system to the ISO standard, it was necessary to conduct internal audits frequently. AM&T, who assisted Alstom in preparing for certification, proposed that they, AM&T, conduct the internal quality audits for Alstom. In addition, Alstom requested that AM&T audit some of their key suppliers.

Project: Working with the Alstom team, AM&T established a schedule for monthly internal audits at the Hornell facility and some key supplier audits. AM&T has been performing the internal audits and follow-up of corrective actions on a monthly basis for the last two years and has completed some key supplier audits, not only in the U.S. but also worldwide.

Impacts: AM&T provided the Alstom team the required discipline necessary to keep their ISO Quality Management System on track, anticipate and fix problems, which resulted in the passing of surveillance audits conducted by the Registrar on a twice a year basis. Maintaining certification is significant since most contracts Alstom bids on has ISO certification and supplier audits as a requirement. Alstom has been able to retain and obtain large contracts with New Jersey Transit, Chicago Transit Authority, Amtrack (California), Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority and others.
