Company Profile: Silicon Carbide Products, Inc. an ISO 9002 registered company, started operations in 1994 in the Ceramics Corridor Incubator in Big Flats, NY, and three years later moved into a new facility in the Airport Corporate Park in Horseheads, NY. SCP manufactures custom ceramic components for demanding industrial applications, using their internally-developed SCPProbond materials. SCP focuses on quick response, cost-competitiveness and high quality.

Situation: SCP discovered early on in its operation in their new facility that AM&T could be a valuable resource to their organization’s success. As a result, over the last several years, AM&T has engaged with SCP in an ongoing series of integrated projects aimed at focusing the direction of the company and streamlining SCP’s processes.

Project: AM&T was able to assist by first obtaining a grant through ESD and the Industrial Effectiveness Program. An Assessment was performed, along with a Strategic Plan and preparation for ISO certification. ISO certification was achieved in 2000 and the certification to the new standard was achieved in 2003.

Subsequent to the IEP activities, AM&T has assisted SCP on an on-going basis of continuous improvement in areas of Sales and Marketing training, Strategic Planning, Lean Manufacturing training and implementation, Problem Solving training, and upgrade to the new ISO 9001:2000 Standard, layout and flow analysis for new production, and a customized system for quoting, estimating and scheduling production.

Impacts: As a result of this comprehensive, integrated approach to improvement, SCP has realized a 52% increase in sales over last year and a doubling of the workforce over the last three years. The increase in production necessitated an expansion of 17k square feet to their 6k square foot existing facility. The expansion was completed in December of 2004.
