MEP Resources: Technology Categories Descriptions

Technology Assessments

Technology assessments are documented recommendations for technology solutions that would improve or enhance operations at a manufacturing facility or business segment.

Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality (VR) is a fully immersive, computer-generated environment that users can view and interact within when using virtual reality equipment.

Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that overlays data, images, and video onto a real-world environment using equipment equipped with augmented reality viewing capabilities.

Additive Manufacturing / 3D Printing

3D Printing, also called Additive Manufacturing, creates three-dimensional objects by adding material layer by layer based on a digital model. Printed materials can include plastic, metal, or resin.

Industrial Internet of Things / Sensors

Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) and (Smart) Sensors are electronic devices that collect data about processes and operations and connect to other devices or systems for analysis.

Automation / Cobots

Automation includes hardware and robotics that perform tasks or transfer products and materials. Cobots (collaborative robots) are robots designed to work alongside humans to enhance their capabilities or can perform standalone tasks independently.

ERP

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are software solutions that track and manage core business processes and data. Core business processes may include finance, HR, supply chain, and manufacturing.

MES

Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) are software platforms that track and provide real-time data on the status of critical factory floor metrics such as manufacturing efficiency, throughput, and product quality.

Data Analytics

Data Analytics is the review of large amounts of data to understand trends and make decisions.

Simulations

Simulations use software to model situations and predict outcomes based on various inputs and information.

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computer systems, networks, and data from digital attacks, unauthorized access, damage, and data breaches.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is the use of computer systems that can perform tasks, make decisions, or solve problems on data and inputs.

Other

Advanced technologies that did not fit into another category have been categorized as “Other”.
